World No. 1 Rory McIlroy has work to do on his consistency, according to eight-time major winner Tom Watson.

McIlroy missed the cut at The Players Championship over the weekend for the third time in as many visits to Sawgrass, and only just held on to top rank as Luke Donald narrowly failed to pick up the top-four finish he needed to usurp his Northern Irish rival.

But before The Players, McIlroy had put together a string of impressive results, finishing in the top five at 13 of his last 15 tournaments. Nonetheless, Watson feels that McIlroy's widely-admired swing should be carrying him to even greater heights.

"He seems hot and cold," Watson told Sky Sports. "He hasn't played too well in recent times, but he seems like he's a hot and cold player. I don't know why that should be. He seems like he's got such a rhythmic golf swing he should never miss a shot with that thing."

Turning his attention to Tiger Woods, who finished in a tie for 40th at Sawgrass, Watson has suggested that injury is still hampering the former world No.1.

Asked how he rates Woods' form, Watson said: "It's not very good. He's struggling. I don't know how hurt he is, we know that he says there's significant problems with his knee and his Achilles.

"That makes it tough to swing the golf club when you're hurt, but I don't know how hurt he is."
