Rory expects Portrush resurgence

Rory McIlroy has insisted his slump is now a thing of the past as he aims to secure an emotional triumph at the Irish Open this week.

McIlroy missed the cut at four of his last five events, including at the US Open earlier this month as he spectacularly failed to defend the title he won with such a flourish in 2011.

The Irish Open, which this year is taking place in McIlroy's native Northern Ireland, is where he is hoping he can begin to turn his form around.

He has found memories of the Royal Portrush track, having shot a 61 there as a 16-year-old during the 2005 North of Ireland Championship.

And while he is not predicting a repeat of that dramatic success, he does expect green shoots of improvement to be obvious ahead of the Open Championship next month.

"I feel like I've made a lot of progress and I'm really looking forward to this week and hopefully giving myself a chance to win here," McIlroy told Sky Sports.

"I'm feeling good and [have] had some really good practice over the last 10 days and my game feels in really good shape."
