Day out of Open after birth of first child

Australian golfer Jason Day has withdrawn from the Open Championship in order to spend some time with his new-born son.

Day's wife, Ellie, gave birth to their first child, Dash James Day, on Tuesday, and the current world No. 21 has now chosen to spend time with the pair rather than fly to Britain in order to play in the year's third major, which starts on July 19.

Day will not be replaced in the field unless entrants drop below 156. With past champion Mark O'Meara withdrawing due to injury on Tuesday, currently 155 players are set to tee it up at Lytham - with two berths still to be awarded at events this week.

US Open champion Webb Simpson has a similar family dilemma, as his wife is set to give birth to the pair's second child later in the next few weeks. However, the American has yet to officially withdraw from the event despite previously stating his intention not to play.
