McIlroy aiming to overhaul Tiger

Rory McIlroy revealed he was targeting a five-win season after tasting victory at the Deutsche Bank Championship on Monday.

McIlroy's third PGA Tour triumph of 2012 - adding to the Honda Classic and US PGA Championship - means he has tied Tiger Woods as the man with the most wins this season.

And with two events left in the FedEx Cup play-offs, in which he currently holds the No. 1 spot, McIlroy is aiming to head into the Ryder Cup having tasted even more glory.

"It's nice to get the third win this year and tie Tiger for the guy with the most wins," McIlroy said. "Three is a great number. I'd like to make it four or five after the FedEx.

"But I'm very pleased with how I've played the last few weeks, very pleased at how hard I worked on my game leading up to these few weeks because I felt like it was nearly there, and I just needed to stay patient. I felt like I turned a corner at Akron [at the WGC-Bridgestone] and then it really clicked at Kiawah [at the US PGA Championship], and I've just kept it going from there."

McIlroy famously threw away a four-shot lead on the final day of The Masters in 2011 - but since then, he feels he is far more aware of what is needed to win tournaments. "I think I've just learned," he said. "I've learned how to handle winning big events, carrying myself forward and not dwelling on what's happened, just moving forward, just trying to win another golf tournament, trying to put myself in position.

"There's a time and a place to celebrate and to enjoy what you've done, and going into the play-offs isn't it. You have to just focus on the week ahead. I'll get to Crooked Stick tomorrow [for the BMW Championship] and start to prepare for that tournament."
