O'Hern steals lead from Vegas
Nick O'Hern stormed to the top of the leaderboard at the end of the first day of the Frys.com Open on Thursday.
The Australian started his round in fine fashion, sinking four birdie putts on the opening five holes. O'Hern, already near the leaders, then surged ahead with birdies at 13, 15, 17 and 18 to move to nine-under heading into the second round.
O'Hern's putting was a feature as he continually holed putts beyond the 10-yard mark as he marched to a three stroke lead over the remainder of the field late in the afternoon.
Jhonattan Vegas had earlier separated himself from the field as he looked for a late season win to cap a solid if unspectacular season. Like O'Hern, he birdied four of his opening five holes at CordeValle Golf Club - a spell of golf that laid the foundation for an eventual round of 65, six-under par.
It was the Colombian's putter that really sparked his low scoring - Vegas rolling in mid-range birdie efforts at the third, fourth and 14th to build momentum and rise to the top of the scoreboards.
In the end, his round was good enough to put him one shot clear of Charles Howell III and John Mallinger in the early standings.
Nicolas Colsaerts also shot a 65 on the opening day to move level with Vegas. The Belgian enjoyed a bogey-free round on Thursday, but appeared set for an even greater score afte holing four birdies on the front nine.
Elsewhere, United States Ryder Cup captain Davis Love III began his tournament with a solid round of 69, putting him two-under on the leaderboard.
Open champion Ernie Els, meanwhile, had an unremarkable afternoon in California - scratching round in a level-par round of 71 to leave himself with some work to do on Friday if he is to be sure of his place in the field for the weekend.
