McDowell surges into lead as Tiger lurks

Graeme McDowell fired a second round 66 to lead the way at the halfway stage of the World Challenge in California.

The former US Open champion, who won the event at Sherwood Country Club back in 2010, got off to a flying start with three birdies in his opening three holes as he surged up the leaderboard.

A bogey at the par-four seventh briefly checked his charge, but the Northern Irishman picked up another four shots on the back nine to take a three-stroke lead from Americans Keegan Bradley, Jim Furyk and Bo Van Pelt on six-under.

"I'm looking to the next 10 weeks off being a springboard to 2013, to be honest with you," McDowell said. "I would love to compete and play well this weekend, you know, really to kind of put a little icing on what's been a mediocre year.

"Despite the fact that I feel like I've played some decent golf this year, I really don't have a lot to show for myself, and this would be a nice way to finish."

Tournament host Tiger Woods is a shot further back on five-under after his round of 69, while overnight leader Nick Watney slipped to four-under after shooting 73 on Friday.

Ian Poulter is well off the pace after his level par 72 leaves him ten shots back following his opening round 73. The Englishman is one shot ahead of Jason Day, who is two-over-par after 36 holes.
