Defiant Donald comes up short at Tampa Bay

Luke Donald fought hard until the bitter end but was unable to retain his Tampa Bay Championship trophy on Sunday, as Kevin Streelman secured the victory.

The defending champion recorded a four-under-par on Saturday to give himself a chance of holding on to his crown, but after being two shots off the lead after three rounds he was unable to deny Streelman from winning the tournament.

A bogey-free two-under-par was not enough for the Englishman, who finished tied for fifth on the overall leaderboard with Justin Leonard and Greg Chalmers.

Jim Furyk, Sergio Garcia and previous leader Shawn Stefani all finished five-under.

Heading into the final day in Florida Donald had played superbly to get himself back into contention following a difficult start to the defence of his title.

The last day saw Streelman, George Coetzee and Leonard all tied for the lead on six-under-par.

Donald had been six shots behind at the halfway stage of the tournament and appeared to be falling away very easily. But, he played a fine third round to claw himself near the leaders.

However, he just came up short as Streelman did not drop a shot throughout the final day, and with it secure his maiden PGA Tour title, finishing two shots ahead of Boo Weekley.

"That was really cool," Streelman said speaking to NBC television. "It just shows that if you follow your dreams anything is possible."
