Ian Poulter has followed Rory McIlroy's lead in adding this week's Valero Texas Open to his schedule.

While McIlroy has made the move in a bid to sharpen his game following an abject start to the season, Poulter has taken the decision in order to shake things up ahead of the opening major of the season.

Twelve months ago, Poulter was hauling himself out of his sick bed to play at The Masters, having been struck down with pneumonia. This time round his form is sharp and he describes a trip to San Antonio as a 'perfect fit'.

"I've never played the week prior to The Masters before but I've only played three events so far this year so it feels like a perfect fit," Poulter told the Daily Mail.

Event organisers at the Texas Open are drafting in extra staff to cope with the likely swelled gate numbers to see the likes of McIlroy, Poulter, Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke.
