Prize money at the French Open will rise for both singles champions and players who lose in some of the early rounds.

Roland Garros organisers said on Monday that the overall total for the tournament will go from £15.6 million to £18.8 million, with the winners receiving £1.28 million - an increase of 20 per cent.

Players eliminated in the second, third and fourth rounds will receive 25 per cent more than they did last year. The tournament begins May 26.

French Tennis Federation director Gilbert Ysern says his organization "wishes to maintain its effort with regards to players eliminated during the first week."

Further increases totaling another £8.54 million are expected by 2016.
