Guan makes cut at Zurich Classic
Guan Tianlang extended his stay at the Zurich Classic in New Orleans after he posted a three-under 69 in the second round on Friday to make the cut.
The 14-year-old was handed an invite to the event from the sponsors and, after his great display at the Masters in Augusta where he become the youngest player to make the cut at the major, Guan made it through to another tournament weekend with the cut falling at three-under.
Guan recorded a 72 in round one, and he began the second round with three birdies on the first nine. The Chinese amateur dropped a shot on the sixth par-four, but recovered well to hold par in the final two holes on the opening nine.
A birdie on the 13th arrived for the rising star, although he gave that shot back shortly after with a bogey. But a par on the 15th and a fifth birdie of the day on the 16th hole rounded off an impressive performance from Guan, leaving him at three-under for the event.
"I think I played a very good round today," Guan said after the second round - with many golfers still out on the course at the time.
"I made a lot of birdies and got a couple of good up-and-downs, so it was still a pretty good round. I think I made the cut. It has been a little different [to the Masters], I would just like to prepare for another tournament. Not much different, just doing normal [things] that I should do.
Lucas Glover is the clubhouse leader on 12-under after the American carded a 67, with Boo Weekley just the one shot adrift of his fellow countryman.
Englishmen Justin Rose and Brian Davis are tied for sixth on seven-under, five shots behind the leader along with Jerry Kelly, with Ernie Els on eight-under.
