Sir Nick Faldo has confirmed he will play in this year's Open Championship at Muirfield.

Faldo, the six-time major champion, has decided to make his first appearance since 2010 in the major he won three times as a player - two of them at the Scottish course that will host the 2013 iteration.

"I've been fighting it for years," Faldo, who has spent the last few years focusing on his work as an analyst for US television, said. "I was in the gym on Monday, and it suddenly just hit me. I thought, 'Come on, this is one more walk,' and I'll probably never get a chance to walk at Muirfield.

"If I can just get over the hurdle and say to myself, 'What will be, will be.' I can't go for score. I can't be any fitter. If I can just hit a few solid long irons, who knows what could happen? I could just go play and enjoy the shot."

Faldo has chosen his son, Matthew, to caddie for him during the week - saying he is mainly playing to allow his family to experience the event.

"I've got just over two months to go to get myself to pretend that I'm a golfer," Faldo added.

Faldo won the Claret Jug at Muirfield in 1987 and 1992. He missed the cut on his last appearance, at St Andrews, three years ago.
