The top three players in the world, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and Adam Scott, have been paired together for the first two rounds of next week's US Open.

World No. 1 Tiger Woods is gunning for a fourth victory in the event at Merion, while second-ranked player McIlroy is looking to add to his one and only triumph from 2011 at Congressional.

Masters champion Scott is also in the group, and is the only player in the field still capable of completing the grand slam.

Taking to Twitter shortly after the announcement, McIlroy said: "Decent group for the first two rounds at Merion I see..."

Luke Donald will tee-off with fellow Englishman Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer, while defending US Open champion Webb Simpson is alongside Open winner Ernie Els and Steven Fox.

Sergio Garcia has Padraig Harrington and Stewart Cink - both former Open champions - in his group, and 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell is with Jim Furyk and Zach Johnson.
