Sergio Garcia made a solid start to the defence of his Wyndham Championship crown after the Spaniard fired an opening round of 65 to trail leader Chris Stroud by one shot.

Garcia kicked off the day with two birdies on the first two holes - stroking in putts from five and 12 feet respectively to make an early impression.

He did well to save par on the fifth hole, holding from eight feet, and five more pars followed as he closed out the opening nine and entered the back nine on two-under for the round.

A third birdie of the day arrived on the par-4 11th, with Garcia setting up the opportunity following a fine approach shot from 156 yards out.

The 13th par-4 enabled Garcia to make another birdie, and he continued to impress by coming close to an eagle on the 15th but settled for a fifth and final birdie of the round.

Top of the leaderboard is American Stroud, who hit a round of 64 to lead on six-under despite carding two bogeys. He recovered from the two dropped shots with eight birdies.

Second is Australian Matt Jones on five-under along with Garcia, with Robert Garrigus and rising talent Jordan Spieth all scoring rounds of 65 to put themselves in contention on the opening day.
