Tiger Woods left himself three shots off the lead at The Barclays, shooting an opening-round 4-under 67 to tie for seventh place in his bid for a third FedEx Cup title as threatening weather brought severe delays at Liberty National.

Play was interrupted twice due to thunder and lightning in the area, the delays lasting for a total of nearly six hours. Ranked No. 1 on the FedEx Cup points list, Woods did not drop a shot in a round which included four birdies, with three in a row from holes 14 through 16.

To preserve his bogey-free round, Woods got up and down out of deep greenside rough at the 9th hole, his 18th of the day having started on the back nine.

"I was playing really solid through there," Woods said of his stretch of birdies. "I missed a little short one at the par 5 [13th] and then birdied three in a row. It was nice to get that kind of momentum but then we stopped and had a few-hour delay and then we got back out there again."

Woods said he was tired after the rain delays stretched his round out to just under 11 hours from start to finish and admitted that he didn't do well on the par 5s, playing them to even par.

"I played pretty solid today and I gave myself some looks; and the looks I did, I ended up making," he said. "If I can play the par 5s a little better, I would have been higher on the board."

Kevin Stadler leads in New Jersey after hitting 64, with Ryan Palmer, Henrik Stenson - who carded nine birdies - and Camilo Villegas one shot back with 6-under 65s.

Justin Rose, the US Open champion, stayed right in contention with a 3-under 68, tied for 14th place. Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell are even par after the first day, along with US PGA champion Jason Dufner. Lee Westwood carded a 2-over 73.
