Henrik Stenson birdied the 18th hole to snatch an overall lead in the race for the $10 million prize at the Tour Championship in Atlanta with a first round six-under 64.

Stenson put on a clinic over the front nine with five birdies and another at the 15th before he dropped a shot at the next hole. But a par at the 17th before his last-gasp birdie ensured Adam Scott had to settle for second place at five under.

Billy Horschel and Steve Stricker are one shot back on the Australian with eight players tied for sixth on two under in a group including Justin Rose, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Charl Schwartzel, Webb Simpson and Jason Day.

Luke Donald is a further shot back after carding an even-par 70 while three bogeys in a round without a single birdie left Tiger Woods nine shots off the lead with a three-over 73.
