Patrick Reed leads the Humana Challenge by two shots at the halfway point after a second consecutive round of 63 in California.

A day after shooting a nine-under round at PGA West's Arnold Palmer Private Course to go in front, Reed repeated the feat down the road at the La Quinta Country Club to lead Brendon Todd.

"It's great to have that feeling that you can go out and shoot 63," said Reed. "And to actually do it two times in a row shows that what we have done during the off-season and what we're doing now is working."

Reed has eight birdies and just one bogey in 36 holes. The highlight of his second day was a high five-iron approach on the par-five fifth that rolled to four feet to set up an eagle.

"That tee shot on five's not easy," Reed said. "You have to hit a perfect high cut around that tree and if it goes straight, you're actually through the fairway. You have to hit a hook around those trees. And when I hit a perfect drive like that, had a perfect number for a five-iron to the left flag. When I hit something three-quarters or 85 percent, it's normally a little draw, so I just aimed it in the middle of the green and hit it up there to four feet. That was kind of just perfect for me."

Ryan Palmer sits in third, three shots back at 15-under, having made 65 at La Quinta in a round which included a short eagle putt on the fifth. Charley Hoffman, the 2007 winner, was 14-under following a 66 on PGA West's Jack Nicklaus Private Course, with five straight birdies on the front nine.

Zach Johnson is tied for eighth after a round of 68, with an eagle, six birdies and two bogeys - on his first two holes.

"I would like to start over, but this is a tournament of patience," Johnson said.

Keegan Bradley, who played alongside Johnson, is nine under after a round of 66 which included a hole-in-one on the third when his 176-yard shot landed roughly 10 feet short of the pin and rolled in.

"A little baby seven-iron," Bradley said.
