Kaymer goes eagle-eagle

Through 26 tournaments in the 2013-14 PGA Tour season, there had been 667 eagles recorded by 195 players heading into the Wells Fargo Championship, but only two made them on consecutive holes.

Martin Kaymer became the third when he went two under par on back-to-back holes at Quail Hollow during the first round.

Making his scorecard look a bit more unusual, he bookended those eagles with bogeys, meaning he played the four-hole stretch on the front nine at two under par.

"I told my caddie to keep the ball," said Kaymer, 29, who has 10 worldwide victories. "It's very rare that you make two eagles in a row. I don't think I've ever done that before."

It would be understandable.

This season, Max Home did it at the ninth and 10th holes at the TPC Sumerlin at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas. Tag Ridings did it on the 18th and first holes of Torrey Pines North during the Farmers Insurance Open.

After a bogey at the sixth hole (his 15th), Kaymer knocked his approach on the green at the par-five seventh and then holed a 50-footer for eagle. The eighth is a short par-four measuring 350 yards. After a drive, Kaymer holed a sand wedge shot from 60 yards. He then bogeyed the ninth hole to finish with a three-under-par 69.

Kaymer won the 2010 PGA Championship in a play-off over Bubba Watson and went to No.1 in the world briefly in 2011. He also holed the Cup-clinching putt for Europe at the 2012 Ryder Cup. Kaymer, from Germany, is now ranked 63rd in the world.
