Jimenez tops own record to triumph in Spain

Miguel Angel Jimenez broke his own record for being the oldest winner on the European Tour for a second time after triumphing in a three-man play-off to claim the Open de Espana title.

The 50-year-old, who first extended the record he held with victory at the Hong Kong Open last December, beat Thomas Pieters and Richard Green to capture his maiden national Open title following a thrilling final round at PGA Catalunya Resort.

Jimenez, Green and Pieters all ended the final round on four-under. In the play-off, all three players failed to find the green on the 18th.

Jimenez, who came fourth at the Masters, almost chipped in to leave himself an easy par. Green could not get up and down from over the green while Pieters' par putt caught the lip of the hole and horseshoed out to hand victory to Jimenez.

"I've played so many times in the Spanish Open, it's great to finally win it, it's amazing to win the national Open of my country," Jimenez, who also beat Arnold Palmer's record for being the oldest champion at the event, told Sky Sports.

"Every title is special, and you don't like to say one is better than the other but to win the Spanish Open is very, very important to me."

When asked what has been behind his recent success, Jimenez replied: "It's no secret, just good food, good wine, good cigars and a bit of exercise - simple."
