A 66 by Scotland's Peter Whiteford brought him from four shots back to a share of the lead with David Horsey after the third round of the Russian Open.

Playing at the Tseleevo Golf and Polo Club in suburban Moscow, Horsey shot a 2-under 70 but required to hole out from a greenside bunker at the last to remain joint leader. He is just one of three players in the world's top 200 competing in Russia.

"Pete started like a train and I was just trying to tell myself to concentrate on my own game," said Horsey, who is chasing his third career victory on the European Tour. "I didn't quite maintain it that well on the back nine, but I kept myself in there and hopefully it'll be a little better tomorrow."

Whiteford is looking for his first victory on the Tour in his 181st event and says he has endured a "brutal" year. "I'm not confident at all but that front nine today helps massively and I'm glad Dave and I have put a bit of breathing space between us and the next guys. It might be a bit like match play on the front nine tomorrow."

Whiteford's fellow Scot Scott Jamieson (69), Italy's Andrea Pavan (64) and Belgium's Thomas Pieters (72) share third place at 9-under.
