Compton sparkles in Greenbrier Classic

Greenbrier Classic Leaderboard
American Erik Compton shot a superb 63 to head up the leaderboard after the first round of the Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs.
Ironically, Compton made a woeful start, bogeying his second and third holes. But after the early hiccup he played beautifully, firing in birdies left, right and centre to completely dominate the Old White Course.
After going out in 32, he picked up a further five shots on the back nine to finish the day with a one shot lead on seven-under par.
One shot adrift are the trio of George McNeill, Pat Perez and Jeff Overton. A bogey at the last prevented Overton from joining Compton but the in-form player ended his round well in contention.
Zimbabwe's Brendon de Jong hit a stylish 65 to begin his campaign well. De Jong is having a terrific season having already bagged five top ten finishes so far and he is on course for a similar feat again.
The same cannot be said for American duo Kevin Stadler and Kenny Perry. Perry, who tied for second at the 2009 US Masters, carded a five-over par 75. He never really got going as pars were followed up with bogeys and one birdie in the entire round told its own story.
Stadler fared marginally better with a 73. In fact, his round had looked respectable until three bogeys on his final three holes left him 10 shots behind the leader.
