Woods fails to make big impression

Tiger Woods failed to make any substantial inroads at the top of the leaderboard after finally completing his second round at Whistling Straits.

The world No. 1 parred his first six holes before bad light brought an early end to his round on Friday. How he will have wished the elements had been kinder as the American made a bogey at the seventh on his return to the course.

He fared better on the back nine, picking up shots at the 10th, 14th and 17th but a 70 leaves him with much ground to make up if he is to secure a 15th Major title.

European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie is likely to be far from impressed with how some of his potential recruits played. Padraig Harrington had looked on course to banish the demons from his disappointing first-round 75, having hit four birdies in six holes at the start of his second round.

But the golf gods were against him and the Irishman signed off with a 71 to leave him on two-over and in danger of missing the cut. Luke Donald and Justin Rose are likely to feel the axe too.

Jim Furyk made his presence known with an impressive 68. The 2003 US Open champion birdied four out of his first five holes to move within two shots of overnight leader Matt Kuchar.

JB Holmes maintained the American theme with a stunning round of 66 to catapult up the standings. The huge hitter did not drop a shot and continued where he left off to move to a healthy six-under for the tournament.

Bubba Watson, who led after the first round, had nine holes left to complete his second round and he carded a 71 to sit tied for fifth.
