Colin Montgomerie has admitted he is faced with a "bordering on the impossible" task of selecting his three captain's picks for the Europe Ryder Cup team.

With one event remaining before he has to name his side, Montgomerie is facing the prospect of having to disappoint a number of star names. Paul Casey, Padraig Harrington, Luke Donald and Justine Rose are just four of the players stuck on the fringe of the team. That quartet cannot get in by right after deciding to miss the Johnnie Walker Championship in favour of the first event of the FedEx Cup.

Simon Dyson, Ross McGowan and Alvaro Quiros could force their way into the side with victory at Gleneagles and Montgomerie has admitted he could easily take 20 players - as opposed to the limit of 12.

"This isn't difficult, it's bordering on the impossible," Montgomerie told Sky Sports News. "It is most unfortunate that I am going to have to leave out world stars. I am going to have to leave out players that feel they can help the European Tour cause."

Montgomerie has likened his decision to the one which faced Fabio Capello ahead of the World Cup finals.

"It's a bit like Fabio Capello having to leave out Theo Walcott, I suppose," he said. "He could only take 23, I can only take 12. I wish I could take 20, I do, I really do, becaue 20 deserve their spots this year, they really do. They've played great, the standard on tour has been the best it's ever been.

"This has been the hardest team to make of any Ryder Cup team I have been involved with. So unfortunately, yes, I can't please everybody on Sunday night and I am going to speak to everybody.

"They understand that already. They understand my dilemma and their own. And it is up to them to try and prove to me - this last final chance to make it pay."
