Davis Love III is being widely tipped to be named US Ryder Cup captain for 2012, with an official announcement to be made on Thursday.

Europe are close to naming their captain for the event at Medinah, with Jose Maria Olazabal the overwhelming favourite, and the Spaniard could be opposed by Love III.

Love III is believed to be a favourite of senior US players and his record in and commitment to the Ryder Cup is impressive. He has played in six Ryder Cups, winning twice, and was a vice captain at Celtic Manor.

He is still a regular competitor on the PGA Tour, he finished ninth in the Sony Open at the weekend, and this is viewed as being vitally important so as to remain in regular and close contact with the players.

The official announcement on the US captain is due on Thursday and he has the backing of world No. 6 Steve Stricker. "He'll be a great captain," Stricker said. "He's played on a ton of these teams, and I remember when he had that deciding point (at the Belfry in 1993). He's still out here playing and he's involved with all the guys."
