Bubba Watson won an engrossing personal duel with Phil Mickelson to claim victory in the Farmers Insurance Open in California on Sunday.

Overnight challengers Anthony Kim and Hunter Mahan both fell off the pace early, leaving the aforementioned pair to push for honours at Torrey Pines.

Watson, who had trailed Mickelson by a shot at the start of play, grabbed the lead after three holes when he birdied the third as Mickelson bogeyed. Each player then carded birdies and bogeys, before both birdieing at 9, 11 and 13.

But Mickelson's tap in at 13 came after his eagle putt did a full circle of the hole, and that miss would be a turning point as he then bogeyed the 14th. He finished off with a pair of birdies in one final twist but Watson too birdied the last hole to claim a one-shot victory at 16-under.

Last week's winner Jhonatton Vegas was level with Watson coming onto the back nine but he failed to continue his charge this time, leaving him level with Dustin Johnson in a tie for third at 13 under.

Tiger Woods' forgettable weekend came to an end with an 75 that still leaves question marks over the current state of his game. Although the world No. 3 insists his rebuilt swing is proving its worth on the driving range, he is struggling to translate that into tournament golf.

There were five bogeys for Woods, who finished at one-under, as he struggled to find any rhythm with the putter on a course that has seen him record seven wins in the past.

Elsewhere, Nick Watney emerged from nowhere to hammer a 63, taking him to ten-under, after picking up birdies at eight of the back nine.
