Calado wins final GP2 race of the season
James Calado won the final GP2 race of the season after making good start in Sunday's Abu Dhabi sprint and holding off Dani Clos for 22 laps.
Clos finished a close second ahead of newly-crowned champion Fabio Leimer in third. Sam Bird took fourth and in doing so clinched the teams' championship for Russian Time as main rivals Carlin failed to finish in the points.
The race got off to a messy start as Calado made a bold move to take the lead from Jonny Cecotto, who started from pole position but spun at the first corner. Felipe Nasr, who had started alongside Cecotto on the first row, was also a part of the Turn 1 accident and dropped down the field. Feature race winner Alexander Rossi crashed out at Turn 2, resulting in a safety car to clear his stricken Caterham.
The race restarted on lap three despite several marshals still in the line of fire at Turn 2 and Calado led Clos away. The race leader showed an impressive turn of pace as Clos fell back towards Leimer and Bird took fourth place from Daniel Abt, which he held for the rest of the race.
A second safety car period was caused when Jon Lancaster attempted an ambitious passing move on Stephane Richelmi at Turn 9 and spun as he made contact with the DAMS car. Lancaster's engine cut out, leaving the Hilmer car in a dangerous position that required a safety car to allow the marshals to clear it.
Calado managed the situation well, and although he came under pressure from Clos at the restart, never looked like losing the position. His second win of the year secured him third place in the drivers' championship ahead of Nasr.
