Felipe Nasr won the sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix after taking the lead at the first corner and holding off a charge from Johnny Cecotto in second place.

GP2 championship standings

  • 1. Jolyon Palmer 210 pts
  • 2. Felipe Nasr 178 pts
  • 3. Stoffel Vandoorne 135 pts
  • 4. Johnny Cecotto Jr 127 pts
  • 5.Stefano Coletti 98 pts

Nasr made a lightning-quick start from fifth on the grid to place his car on the apex at La Source and beat Daniel Abt, who had started from pole, on the exit. Jolyon Palmer latched on to the rear of Abt through Eau Rouge and along the Kemmel Straight, only to outbrake himself and run wide, slowing Abt in the process as he rejoined the track.

That allowed Cecotto to close in on Palmer and on lap two found a way past to take second. He closed on Nasr in the lead but despite getting within a second at one point, did not quite have the pace to attempt a passing move.

The top three finished as they were after lap two, but Mitch Evans closed in on Palmer in the final few laps to finish just 0.4s off as they crossed the line. Abt held on to fifth despite slowing by a couple of seconds a lap at the end, and he crossed the line with Stoffel Vandoorne 0.6s behind.

Stefano Coletti and Alexandre Negrao took the final two points on offer in seventh and eighth.
