Ferrari development driver Jules Bianchi and Renault reserve driver Ho-Pin Tung both fractured vertebrae after the pair collided at the GP2 feature race at the Hungaroring on Saturday.
French driver Bianchi, who is managed by Felipe Massa's manager Nicolas Todt, spun his ART at the start and was then hit head-on by Tung. Bianchi was taken to the AEK hospital where a vertebrae fracture was diagnosed. Ferrari confirmed the injury will keep him "out of action for quite a long time".
Bianchi, who signed a multi-year contract with Ferrari in December, "will not be back in the cockpit until he has fully completed his rehabilitation programme," read a team statement.
Tung was also airlifted to the same AEK hospital in Budapest where Felipe Massa recovered after being hit in the helmet by a loose spring last year. And Renault confirmed on Sunday that Tung also suffered a small fracture on the lumbar vertebra.
"No surgery is required and his period of recovery is not expected to be an extended one," added a Renault statement. "A further medical examination is scheduled for two weeks' time to assess his recovery."
Tung will stay in hospital until Tuesday.
