Sam Bird took his maiden GP2 victory at Monza as Pastor Maldonado all but secured the GP2 championship despite crashing out.

After starting on the front row next to team-mate Jules Bianchi on pole, Bird took the lead at the first corner and upheld his advantage until the chequered flag despite two safety cars.

Championship leader Maldonado crashed out at the first chicane after mounting the back of Romain Grosjean's DAMS, but is still likely to take the title as his main rival Sergio Perez also crashed in a separate incident. Perez needs to take maximum points at the next three races to keep his very slim championship hopes alive, while a single point will make Maldonado the 2010 champion.

Bianchi finished second to make it an ART one-two, and Oliver Turvey finished third to complete the podium. Christian Vietoris finished fourth ahead of Jerome d'Ambrosio, Adrian Zaugg, Edoardo Piscopo and Max Chilton in eighth.

But the day belonged to Bird who finally secured his first GP2 win after a season filled with bad luck and what-ifs.
