Glasgow Warriors coach Sean Lineen was relieved his side finished their Heineken Cup campaign with a 23-16 victory at Newport Gwent Dragons, but admitted it was a poor match to witness.

Wing DTH van der Merwe scored two tries and scrum-half Colin Gregor got one that helped Glasgow from a 16-6 deficit to their seven-point win.

Dragons wing Aled Brew got the home side's only touchdown, while fly-half Jason Tovey kicked a drop goal and two penalties against two penalties from Ruaridh Jackson and a Gregor conversion.

Lineen said: "It was not a great game of rugby and, when people say it is a dead rubber, you could see that throughout the match. Both teams were going through the motions at times. There was not much of a spark in it but to come away from home without playing well and win in Europe is big.

"There were lots of mistakes and fumbles and, at stages, it looked like a pre-season game. We were poor and I'm sure Paul [Turner, Dragons coach] will be looking at it the same way with the Dragons. Both teams were trying out there but it is the last game of the Heineken Cup with nothing at stake so what do you say to the players?"

Turner agreed but believed it was one that got away for his side. "The first-half was good for us against a strong wind and we did everything but score but they are a well-organised defensive unit and we just kept on going into the heart of their defence," he said.

"We just needed to lay more siege in their 22. The game was summed up for us at 16-16 when we had a penalty and I felt we should have gone for the corner rather than the goal. They have always got a couple of opportunist players like van der Merwe and it was a game that we actually threw away, really.

"If we are going to throw games away, then dead rubbers are probably the best ones but we were disappointed after the rearguard action last week [at Toulouse]. You have just got to be smarter in games like this."
