The Rugby Football Union has appointed Gerard McEvilly as their new head of discipline.

McEvilly will join in September and takes over from Bruce Reece-Russel who spent 13 years in the role. McEvilly will work alongside RFU disciplinary officer Judge Jeff Blackett and will join the organisation from his current role as head of legal advice and hearings management at the General Pharmaceutical Council.

McEvilly has previously worked on the RFU disciplinary panel and is relishing his new role. "I am delighted at being offered the role of head of discipline at the RFU and to be able to combine my regulatory and disciplinary experience with my passion for rugby," McEvilly said. "I very much look forward to working closely with colleagues at the RFU and with all those involved in disciplinary issues within the game."

Blackett welcomed his appointment saying: "I've worked with Gerard for a number of years in the disciplinary sphere and the range of his experience and professionalism will be a tremendous asset to the game."
