Scotland and Gloucester scrum-half Rory Lawson will be sidelined for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a groin injury.

The 30-year-old injured his groin against Aviva Premiership leaders Harlequins two weeks ago as he fell awkwardly at a ruck. Scans revealed a severe abdominal and adductor disruption and he had an operation on Wednesday evening.

The Scotland international is expected to be out of action for 12 weeks, ruling him out of Gloucester's bid to reach the Premiership play-offs and denying him the chance of breaking back into the Scotland team before the end of the Six Nations tournament.

Lawson, who has won 30 caps for Scotland and skippered the national side five times, has dropped down the pecking order for Scotland with Mike Blair and Chris Cusiter preferred to the Gloucester scrum-half in this year's Six Nations.
