Ireland flanker Chris Henry underwent exploratory surgery to repair a defect in his heart wall on Monday after a blocked blood vessel in his brain was revealed last week.

Henry, 30, missed Ireland's Autumn international against South Africa on November 8 due to an unspecified illness and later suffered from migraines. The extent of the issue was later revealed and he was ruled out of rugby for the foreseeable future.

Ulster's new manager Bryn Cunningham confirmed on Tuesday to BBC Sport Northern Ireland that he had been operated on.

"We know that Chris went in for an operation yesterday," Cunningham said. "We're waiting for the medical staff to give us an update on that."

A medical bulletin from the IRFU later said, "Chris is recovering from a procedure yesterday to repair a defect in his heart wall. This was found to be related to his recent episode and has been performed to prevent further issues."
