Jersey have made a significant statement of intent with the signing of winger Richard Haughton ahead of the new RFU Championship season.

Jersey were promoted from National 1 last season and former Wasps winger Haughton becomes their 11th signing this summer. The news of his signing is a coup for the new Championship side with Haughton playing Aviva Premiership rugby last term.

Haughton played a key role in keeping Wasps in the top-flight but he was released by the Premiership club and will now drop to the Championship. Jersey director of rugby Ben Harvey is delighted with his new signing and hopes that Haughton will help herald in the next generation of wingers at Jersey.

"Richard has played rugby at a high level, and he impressed me with his enthusiasm for joining Jersey for an exciting first season of Championship rugby," Harvey said. "Although he has connections here through his wife's family, this was first and foremost a rugby decision for Richard, enabling him to take the next step in his career.

"As well as playing a full part on the field, I also anticipate that he will be able to pass on his experience from Premiership, Heineken Cup and international rugby to the younger, less-experienced members of the squad."
