England stars have rugby lesson for teachers

A hundred rugby coaches from schools throughout the South East attended the RFU's Rugby Teacher Development Programme at Epsom College last week.

The one-day workshop was one of 16 held nationwide as part of the RFU's drive to improve coaching skills at grassroots level and included a variety of presentations for both new and experienced coaches.

The programme, supported by the Daily Mail, England Rugby Football Schools Union and sportscoachUK, offered courses for both developing and experienced schools coaches.

Involved in the day's events were England scrum-half Andy Gomarsall, former England and Lions No.8 Tony Diprose, who is now the Assistant Academy Manager at Harlequins, and sprint coach Margot Wells, who works with leading players like England fly half Danny Cipriani.

And presentations were also given by Mike Schmidt, Esher's Director of Rugby, and RFU Coach Development Officer Jon Bates.

The delegates participated in coaching sessions covering speed training for players, safety, the scrum and the tackle, defensive play and counter-attacking from turnover ball.

Players from Epsom College's first team squad and Year 8 boys from Glyn Technology School were on hand to take part in practical demonstrations.

"Coaching days such as these are definitely the way forward," said Gomarsall.

"It is very beneficial for both experienced and new teachers to work alongside professional players and senior coaches and benefit from the wealth of knowledge available."
