Rugby Champions Cup touted to Guinness

Guinness have been earmarked as a potential sponsor of the Rugby Champions Cup, according to reports in France.

The battle over the future of the Heineken Cup is still in full flow with the English and French clubs showing no signs of backing down from their plans to push forward with the newly formed Champions Cup for next season.

The competition will be club-run, rather than the current union-organised Heineken Cup, and while Premiership Rugby and Ligue Nationale de Rugby have thrown their collective weight behind the new tournament - which will need ratification from the International Rugby Board - the RaboDirect PRO12 sides are yet to declare their hand.

But despite there still being a couple of hurdles in the way of the organisers before the new Champions Cup becomes ratified, it seems they have already started planning for sponsors and Midi Olympique claims delegates acting on behalf of the new breakaway competition have met Guinness representatives in Dublin to ascertain whether they would be interested in sponsoring the new competition.

Guinness are no strangers to rugby having previously been title-sponsors of the Premiership and currently have the naming rights to Ireland's autumn Test series.
