The whip rules controversy has taken a fresh twist with jockeys likely to go on strike by taking the decision not to ride on Monday.

There has been a huge storm of protest since the new rules were brought in on Monday, October 10, with riders, the majority of trainers and owners unhappy with both the change to the whip regulations and the severity of punishments.

Leading rider Richard Hughes has picked up two bans in four days and took the decision on Thursday to quit the saddle until a solution is found that suits all parties.

Many leading figures in the game have come out in support of Hughes and it would appear his weighing room colleagues are backing the rider, as the decision has been taken not to ride on Monday.

There are three scheduled meetings on Monday, at Plumpton, Pontefract and Windsor.

The decision will send reverberations through the racing world, as there is likely to be a huge loss of turnover in the sport.
