Walsh fumes after picking up whip ban

Ruby Walsh has launched a furious attack on the new whip rules following his controversial ban for his winning ride aboard Edgardo Sol at Aintree.

Walsh galvanised his mount to repel the late challenge of The Cockney Mackem in the Betfred Bundles Novices' Limited Handicap Chase, with winning trainer Paul Nicholls describing the ride as "awesome".

The Irishman incurred the wrath of the stewards who found him guilty of striking his mount more than the maximum permitted eight times.

Walsh emerged from his meeting with the stewards in a furious mood, saying: "Who found my ride ridiculous? Come on, where's this public perception we keep getting told about? If that ride deserves five days this game is done for."

It would appear his weighing room colleagues were in agreement with Walsh as there was a lengthy delay to the following race as the riders initially refused to enter the paddock. Walsh and the other jockeys were eventually persuaded to ride, but it would appear there is still major unhappiness with the amended whip rules - raising the possibility of a strike in the future.

Walsh will be banned from November 5-9 and will miss big rides aboard Kauto Stone and The Nightingale at Down Royal on November 5.
