Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Danedream disappointed as Buena Vista landed the Japan Cup in Tokyo.

Danedream was heavily tipped for victory, but could finish only sixth after failing to find an extra gear in the home straight. Peter Schiergen's charge lurked ominously among the pack early on, yet failed to produce a pace injection when needed.

"Breaking from a wide stall (13) took a lot out of her. It was difficult for her to find a comfortable position, and on a fast track it showed in the outcome," Schiergen said. "This will be the last race for her this season. If there is no change in her form, she'll be put on a training schedule and might even come back to Japan next year."

With Danedream toiling, the third-richest race on the planet was claimed by Yasunari Iwata's mount, who launched a pursuit of pacesetter Tosen Jordan a furlong out. There was little to separate the pair across the final few strides, but Buena Vista managed to nudge ahead at the most opportune time.

It was a satisfying win for the five-year-old mare, who crossed first in 2010 - only to be disqualified for interference.
