Green Moon towers over rivals to win Melbourne Cup

Green Moon won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington Park on Tuesday as European hopefuls in the field were left disappointed.

Green Moon, trained by Robert Hickmott and ridden by Brett Prebble, grabbed the lead from early pace-setter Glencadam Gold with just under two furlongs to go - and would not relent as he went on to take the post.

Fiorente finished second, with the Marco Botti-trained Jakkalberry preserving some honour for the foreign competitors in the field with a somewhat distant third.

Favourite Dunaden, along with the much-fancied Red Cadeaux, finished well down the field in 14th and eighth respectively.

But the race was all about Green Moon, the five-year-old available at 19/1 in many places ahead of the race.

"He was never going to get beat," Prebble said afterwards. "It's the pinnacle of racing in Australia.

"I've had some great highs here, but you don't get any higher than reaching the pinnacle. If he sustained the journey, nothing was going to go with him.

"It's very emotional and it's going to last for a long time."

Nick Williams, son of victorious owner Lloyd Williams, added: "It's terrific. I'm so proud for all of our team at the farm.

"It's another Melbourne Cup win for 'Team Williams'. We've put a lot of money in and a hell of a lot of effort so to get this result is terrific.

"I'm so excited and so happy for all our people."
