Art Scholar picked up the final big handicap of the Flat season when swooping late to land the November Handicap at Doncaster.

First Mohican was all the rage to maintain his unbeaten record, but he looked all at sea on the quicker ground - having won his three races in the mud - and he failed to land a blow.

At the business end, Franny Norton threaded a passage through runners in the final furlong to put his mount's head in front late on at odds of 20/1.

The final day of the Flat season saw Richard Hughes crowned champion jockey for the first time. Having gone close on a number of occasions in the past, Hughes made up ground following a slow start on account of suspension and won with 172 winners.

"It is fabulous and is a lot better than runner-up I can tell you that," Hughes told Channel 4. "I worked really hard in September and it paid dividends. The boys have worked hard too, I've had a good run."

Cubanita came with a late run to mow down favourite Sajjhaa in the Gillies Fillies' Stakes. The Godolphin runner Sajjhaa looked sure to score when powering clear with over two furlongs to run but her stride began to shorten in the final 1050 yards and Jim Crowley brought Cubanita through to score.
