Bobs Worth lived up to his star billing with a brilliant success in the Hennessy Gold Cup.

Barry Geraghty went the brave man's route down the inside, but he had a willing partner who jumped and travelled superbly before quickening away to thwart the brave Tidal Bay who shouldered top weight for second place.

First Lieutenant, who was in the front rank throughout, finished a brave third, ahead of The Package and Hold On Julio.

Second-season chasers have a fantastic record in Newbury's chasing showpiece and Bobs Worth, in his first race since taking the RSA Chase last term, was produced fit and well to score.

They took no prisoners up front, as First Lieutenant and Fruity O'Rooney duelled for the lead. It was a strong pace that put a host of runners in trouble.

Turning out of the back straight, First Lieutenant had the majority of the field under the cosh. But not Bobs Worth who crept into the race under Geraghty. The pair duelled down the straight, as they did last term in the RSA Chase and just as at Cheltenham, it was Bobs Worth who prevailed at 4/1.

Tidal Bay looks a far happier horse this term and he picked off rivals one by one under top weight, but could not run down Bobs Worth.

There was a disappointing turnout of five for the Rehearsal Chase at Newcastle, but the crowd were treated to a brilliant display as Junior - who made the trip up from David Pipe's Nicolshayne base - fended off his rivals.

Junior was burdened with top weight, but he jumped superbly for Conor O'Farrell and fended off Benny Be Good all the way up the straight.
