Monterosso out of Dubai World Cup

Defending Dubai World Cup champion Monterosso will not race in this year's renewal after being declared a late non-runner.

Monterosso and Mickael Barzalona won the World Cup last year and had planned to defend their crown in 2013.

However, the Godolphin horse is reported to be lame and the Dubai Racing Club revealed he will not run.

"There's a late scratching in the Dubai World Cup. Horse nine, Monterosso will not run. Horse 11, African Story to be ridden by M Barzalona," read an official tweet.

"Monterosso is reported by Emirates Racing Authority as being lame in his left fore."
