Mahmood Al Zarooni has launched an appeal over the length of his eight-year ban from training, the British Horseracing Authority has confirmed.

A BHA statement said the former Moulton Paddocks-based trainer was to appeal over the severity of his punishment, issued by the Disciplinary Panel at a hearing on April 25 after the 37-year-old was found guilty of administering anabolic steroids to 15 horses in his care.

Former Godolphin handler Al Zarooni had been officially charged with rule breaches related to prohibited substances, duty to keep medication records, and conduct prejudicial to racing after tests were carried out on 45 horses at his stables in Newbury.

The date for the appeal has yet to be confirmed.
