McCoy not resting on his laurels

McCoy delight at reaching 4,000 winner mark

Fresh from the celebrations of claiming his 4,000th career winner at Towcester just 24 hours earlier, AP McCoy had to settle for second in his only ride of the day at Southwell on Friday.

McCoy further established himself as the most decorated British jump jockey in history when recovering from three lengths off the lead to power Mountain Tunes to victory in the Wetherbys Novices' Hurdle on Thursday.

The 18-time jump jockey champion admitted he was delighted to achieve the landmark in the colours of JP McManus and for trainer Jonjo O'Neill - the partnership which has been so influential through McCoy's prestigious career.

However, McCoy could not achieve the same when donning the familiar silks for his solo ride at the Nottinghamshire course on Friday, finishing second on Forthefunofit to the Charlie Longsdon-trained No No Romeo.

Meanwhile, the Northern Irishman has revealed he has no plans to retire despite becoming the first jockey in history to achieve 4,000 career wins.

"As a jump jockey you take it day by day," McCoy told BBC Sport. "I really love what I do, but it is about winning and you need to keep winning. But age is only a number.

"At the end of each season, I review how I have got on and how I've performed and you make the decision on whether to carry on from that.

"I will look back and ask, 'Did I do OK? Should I still be riding? Am I still riding as well as I have done in the past?' Those are the questions I always ask myself at the end of every season."
