A five-year-old mare carrying the unborn foal of legendary racehorse Frankel has sold for more than £4 million.

Sheikh Mohammed's racing manager John Ferguson paid four million guineas (£4.2m) for Dancing Rain at the Tattersalls December Mare Sale in Newmarket. The auction house was packed for what had been one of 2013's most anticipated lots.

Frankel held an unbeaten 14-race record for late trainer Sir Henry Cecil which sees him remembered as the greatest racehorse of modern times. He was retired to stud last year with the aim he would produce a new generation in his mould.

Dancing Rain was a renowned frontrunner on the flat. At Ascot in 2011 she claimed the British Champions Fillies' and Mares' Stakes.
