40/1 outsider shocks 2,000 Guineas field
Outsider Night of Thunder stunned the Newmarket crowd to win the 2,000 Guineas for trainer Richard Hannon.
The 40/1 shot prevailed despite a late drift to take first place by half-a-length under jockey Kieren Fallon. Favourite Kingman, who went off at 6/4, finished second with Australia, the 5/2 second favourite, having to settle for third place.
The 14-strong field split into two groups at the start of the mile-long race, which is the first Classic of the British flat season. Night of Thunder started in the group on the far rail before drifting left to claim victory on the nearside and give Fallon a fifth triumph in this race.
Fallon said: "I thought he'd given it away, but he's a good horse and hopefully he can continue."
Winning trainer Hannon, who is in his rookie year as trainer since taking the licence over from his father, was emotional after the triumph.
"We always thought a lot of him and he's done it well," Hannon said. "He gets a mile, no problem, and he settled better today. He pulled a little bit in the Greenham [Stakes, at Newbury - where Kingman got the better of Night of Thunder] and he's turned the form around with Kingman."
