Nicholls reveals Kauto Star infection

Paul Nicholls has revealed Kauto Star returned from his below-par run in the King George VI Chase with a minor infection.
The 11-year-old was bidding for a record fifth win in the race, but he was never travelling with any zest and eventually came home a distant third behind Long Run after a shocking mistake at the second last.
Nicholls revealed in the hours after the race that his dual Gold Cup winner had suffered a minor bleed and he has now confirmed that tests have confirmed an infection.
Writing on his Twitter page, Nicholls said: "Just had K Stars blood test results. Shows signs of inflammation and low grade infection. Week's antibiotics and easy few days. Update on Friday."
Kauto Star did not run within 30lbs of his best form and the news of an infection could go some way to explain the run.
