Qualifying

Welcome to the Hungaroring for qualifying ahead of Sunday's grand prix. Due to the tight nature of the circuit and the difficulty in overtaking, whoever gets pole in this session becomes the big favourite for tomorrow's race.

In free practice Red Bull looked dominant so it's probably going to be between Vettel and Webber. But that's not to say it won't be exciting. Those two are tied on points in the drivers' championship and winning this race will be crucial to getting the upper hand in the team ahead of the summer break.

Alonso is the closest man to the Red Bulls but he was over a second off Webber's best time on soft tyres in final practice.

Despite struggling for pace and Renault being faster in practice, McLaren is unusually chirpy: "We're getting ready for quali. Brand Centre's packed and the sun is shining. Should be fun..."

Perhaps they know something we don't ...

Robert Kubica is the one to watch in this session. He was fourth fastest in final practice and has a real chance of worrying McLaren and Ferrari this weekend.

One of the disappointments this weekend has been Force India. Both drivers have struggled this weekend with tyres and they sacrificed a lot of time on Friday testing a new blown diffuser and Paul di Resta. The car doesn't work so well on the softer compounds but you can't help but think they have written this weekend off as a bit and used it as a test session. They should be back on the pace at Spa and Monza, two tracks that will really suit the car.

So the drivers are getting into their cars ahead of Q1. Just to remind you, seven drivers will be knocked out at the end of this 20 minute session and will make up the back of the grid. It is a given that the three new teams will make up six of those places but it's always a bit of a scramble for the midfield teams not to be the one that gets knocked out with them. This weekend it could be either one of the Force Indias or maybe a Toro Rosso.

The green light is on but we're still waiting for our first car.

Track temperature is high so the super soft tyres should work really well on the first flying lap.

Petrov is the first driver out on track. Kubica joins him, Renault are clearly keen to get a banker lap in.

Webber is the first of the big names to head out and is on hard tyres as expected.

Petrov sets the first competitive time with a 1:23.386. We can expect the fastest times in this session to be around the 1:20s. When the Red Bulls use soft tyres in Q2 and Q3 they will be lapping in the 1:19s.

Petrov improves to a 1:22.713 as the hard tyres start to warm up on his Renault.

Vettel is now fastest with a 1:21.360 ahead of Webber on a 1:21.698. Kubica is third but a second off Vettel's pace.

Alonso splits the Red Bulls with a 1:21.672. There is still time to be found from both of those cars.

Hamilton is pushing very hard and sets the second fastest time. It was a bit of a wild ride, he is clearly pumped up despite having the third, or possibly fourth, fastest car this weekend.

10 minutes to go and as expected the Toro Rossos and Force Indias look like the most likely to drop out ahead of Q2.

Massa is fifth fastest and quicker than team-mate Alonso at the moment.

Schumacher is also struggling again this weekend and is 15th fastest. He should make it through to Q2 but Q3 could be a big ask.

Massa second fastest now, not too far off the Red Bulls. But then Vettel sets a 1:20.417.

Alguersuari is out on soft tyres to try and guarantee a place in Q2. He is currently 18th and set to drop.

And Alguersuari is now eighth. So a few more drivers might head out on soft tyres to make sure of their place in Q2.

Hulkenberg is confident he can do the business on hard tyres and is out there now setting personal bests.

Hamilton and Button are heading out on new hard tyres to make sure of their place. The later the drivers leave it the better the track conditions will be. So we are now getting a lot of cars leaving the pits.

Sutil is up to 11th but that still isn't necessarily safe.

Schumacher is now in 18th but he is about to start another flying lap on the softs. Button is just ahead but he has opted for hard tyres.

Schumacher caught a big slide as he took too much kerb on the exit of the chicane. He's up to 12th with that effort but will get one more attempt. Button is coming up behind traffic.

Button up to 7th so he is safe.

Kobayashi is set to drop and is not on a good lap. He aborts that lap and that means he is out. A big disappointment for Sauber but a sigh of relief for Sutil.

Kobayashi came up behind an HRT on his fast lap but to be honest the sector times before had been pretty bad.

Timo Glock is the fastest of the new teams and that is an accomplishment in itself. Yamamoto also has a reason to smile as he was within a tenth of Senna in the second HRT.

Renault is confident after that session: "That was a good Q1 with Robert P3 and Vitaly P10"

Lotus thought it would beat Virgin in that session: "Disapointing last runs from both drivers, expected more but need to look forward to tomorrow"

Lotus thought it would beat Virgin in that session: "Disappointing last runs from both drivers, expected more but need to look forward to tomorrow"

Cloud overhead has meant the track temperature has dropped slightly. Massa is the first out in Q2 on hard tyres.

A replay shows that Kobayashi ignored a signal to stop for scrutineering at the end of that session. That won't go down well and could add to his woes after failing to make the grade for Q2.

Massa is fighting the rear of the car under braking on his first flying lap as the hard tyres get up to temperature.

Button has gone out on soft tyres to try and ensure a place in Q3.

Alonso is fastest with a 1:21.010 but he is now going even quicker on his second flying lap on hard tyres.

Vettel with a remarkable lap on hard tyres - 1:19.866 - goes fastest.

Vettel is going even faster now, we are starting to see just how dominant the Red Bulls are over one flying lap of the Hungaroring. He completes the lap with three fastest sectors and a time of 1:19.573.

Button is eighth fastest on the soft tyres but that won't guarantee him a place in Q3. Hamilton is sixth but set his time on the hard tyres.

Rosberg is out on softs and is now eighth fastest 0.010 ahead of Button. Schumacher looks in trouble back in 14th. The seven-time champion was marginally faster than Rosberg yesterday but tellingly he was quite happy while Rosberg was pretty upset with the car.

Into the last five minutes of Q2 and we should see another run from all the drivers. Even Vettel is going out again on soft tyres.

Alonso has set the fastest first sector but so far this weekend has been losing over half a second to the Red Bulls in sectors two and three.

Alonso sets a 1:20.237 but the Red Bulls have yet to set a soft tyre lap.

Hulkenberg just ran wide on his fast lap on soft tyres. He will get one more attempt at a quick lap.

Webber is now fastest with a 1:19.531

Button might be in trouble if the Williams can set good times. Schumacher looks as though he is out as Rosberg goes fourth fastest.

Button is out the top ten and could be about to go out.

Schumacher can't find enough and Button misses out by 0.017 behind Hulkenberg.

Disaster for McLaren and a replay shows that Button made a mistake early in the lap and never had the pace to make up for it. Hamilton was just under 0.5 seconds faster in eighth.

Ferrari says: "Session finished. Fernando is 3rd behind the Red Bulls but he has 5 tenths over the 4th. Felipe is 6th together with other four drivers"

Button's lap was very scrappy with the rear of the car stepping out on him. Hamilton can deal with that kind of oversteer, Button cannot.

Kobayashi says he should not have made his last run on hard tyres. And appears to be unaware of the fact he missed a red light at the end of the session. Meanwhile de la Rosa is in the top ten.

Ferrari concede defeat to Red Bull before the start of the session: "It will be tight battle in Q3 for the rows from 2nd to 5th... The 1st is fully booked!"

But you can't argue with Ferrari, the focus is now on which Red Bull driver will take pole.

Alonso sets a good banker lap with a 1:19.987 but the Red Bull boys won't be too concerned.

Webber starts his flying lap. The first sector was pretty ordinary but it's the middle sector where Red Bull is quickest. And he finds 0.5 seconds on Alonso.

Webber sets a 1:19.184 - a good lap but it looked a bit scrappy.

Vettel shows up Webber with a 1:18.773. He really hooked the car up but was still fighting the rear through the final corner. It was great to watch.

But they will all have another attempt on a fresh set of soft tyres. Frantic pit work in the Ferrari garage to get Massa's car out in time.

Kubica has yet to set a time and will just do one run on the softs. He's on his out lap now and will have a clear track.

Lots of frantic work going on at the back of Vettel's car as Webber leaves the garage next door.

Kubica looks a little bit wild in the first sector and will want to have another go on the soft tyres. Hopefully he's got enough fuel for another run.

Alonso sets a very fast first sector as does Massa. All ten cars are out now.

Alonso hold third place ahead of Massa.

Webber is off the pace of Vettel and won't beat him. Nope, 0.6 seconds off Vettel and that means Vettel is on pole.

Vettel doesn't better his time but is 0.4 up on Webber. Brilliant work. Hamilton took fifth ahead of Rosberg, good laps by both of those drivers. Petrov outqualified Kubica after the Pole made a mistake. Very impressive by the Russian rookie. And de la Rosa beats Hulkenberg - a good boost for Sauber.

So, we should see an epic fight between the Red Bulls tomorrow. Remember Vettel has made mistakes off pole this year at the start, so Webber will still fancy his chances. But Webber will have to keep an eye in his mirrors as the fast-staring Ferrari is behind him and on the clean side of the track.
