Free practice 3

Hello and welcome to the final practice session for the Hungarian Grand Prix. We have an hour's action ahead of us before qualifying, in which we should see drivers attempt a low-fuel qualifying run on soft tyres and see teams comtinue to refine the set up on the cars.

Yesterday Red Bull looked very dominant, but Ferrari's Alonso is confident he can close the gap to Vettel ahead of qualifying.

The sun is out but there was a huge downpour overnight and parts of the track are still a little damp. That means a lot of the rubber that was put down yesterday will have been washed away and there won't be much grip.

News from Force India: "We'll be running normal floors on both cars, Adrian will not run blown diffuser. It was an improvement but we are erring on side of caution."

They were 16th and 18th yesterday and are hoping to improve this session. The target is to make Q3 and get points but they will have to up their game.

The green light is on as Kobayashi heads out.

There is a lot of oil down at turn three and the marshals have put cement dust down to soak it up. But as a result the drivers will have to be very cautious.

Force India's plan for Liuzzi: "Tonio will be doing two baseline runs on hard tyres then a soft tyre run to finish"

Alonso and Webber are on track putting in installation laps and staying clear of the oil in sector one.

Button is in a cruise mode in his McLaren, which is usually used to test aero parts. It goes to show that they are still trying new parts.

Vettel reports that there is less grip than on Friday due to the rain and that the oil is pretty bad at turn two and three. He also says that he does not want to go out first so we can expect to wait about 10-15 minutes before we see him out again.

Ferrari is not using its F-duct today: "Both cars are without the blown rear wing: this configuration proved to be quicker in yesterday's sessions"

So no cars are out on track and all we have seen is installation laps so far.

The question now is who will be the first to break and go out on track to clean up that oil?

Virgin says: "Should we stay in or should we go now?"

And they decide to go, di Grassi is out on track.

Yamamoto is also out. The more cars that go over the cement dust at turn three the sooner the grip will improve around that section of the track and the sooner we will see more of the frontrunners on track.

Kovalainen has also gone out in the Lotus. At the moment Yamamoto is following Di Grassi and keeping up with the Virgin. Although neither look as though they are pushing that hard.

Di Grassi sets a 1:29.866, our first timed lap of the day. Not a brilliant one but I suppose we should be grateful that at least some cars are out on track.

Of course it's a catch 22 situation. The track is bad so no one wants to go out. But if no one goes out the grip won't improve.

Trulli is now the fastest with a 1:27.649. His time is beaten by Kovalainen with a 1:27.232. The times will keep improving throughout the session.

Karun Chandhok, who was doing some great commentary on the BBC yesterday, is watching this session from the HRT motor home. "Watching FP3 in engineering office," he says. He's hoping to be back in the car at Spa.

Webber and Kubica are both out on track now.

Renault says: "First run for Robert, we'll see what the track conditions are like now"

Liuzzi is also out on track but runs wide in the final few corners. Trulli also made a mistake at the same corner so grip levels are obviously still low.

Webber is now fastest with a 1:23.149. Yesterday we had times in the low 1:20s so there is still plenty of room for improvement.

Webber and Vettel are now trading fastest laps - 1:21.634 is Webber's best effort so far. All these times are being set on hard tyres so we can expect a big improvement at the end of the session when they bolt the softs on.

Hamilton sets his first competitive lap but is a second off the Red Bulls.

Schumacher is told that his rear wing is "not working". Presumably that means the F-duct on that Mercedes is not doing its job. The team has been struggling at the last few races trying to get that to work.

Vettel sets a 1:20.966 as Webber goes back into the pits.

Button is 2.5 seconds off the pace as Vettel sets a 1:20.261.

Petrov was on a quick lap but lost the rear of the car at turn 12 and ran wide. He's definitely fast around here but needs to iron out the mistakes.

Massa is sliding the rear of the car into every corner. It's great to watch but he is 1.8 seconds off the pace.

Senna just had a half spin through the penultimate corner. No damage done but it proves that grip is still very low.

Button is now 1.5 seconds off the pace and fourth fastest. He lost a huge amount of time through the middle and final sector and was very tentative on the throttle through the last few corners.

Liuzzi has a driveshaft problem and will not be taking any further part in this session. He is currently faster than Sutil but they are both a long way off the pace.

Renault is happy with Petrov's efforts so far: "Vitaly's just done a very commendable time with 1.21.877 this is 6th fastest. Some rear locking for Vitaly otherwise his lap was pretty impressive"

So Vettel is currently 0.8 seconds faster than anyone else. But Webber is back on track now and looking to close that gap.

Alonso has also improved his time but is still third fastest, 0.860 off Vettel.

Webber gets within 0.066 of Vettel's time but was the fastest of all through the middle sector. There is a lot more time in that Red Bull if one of the drivers hooks up three good sectors.

Massa complains of locking up the rear tyres under barking and is slipping and sliding on the throttle. Those tyres on the Ferrari are obviously past their best.

Some work is going on on Vettel's front wing. It looks as though it might have been damaged while flexing.

Adam has been doing some autograph hunting in Budapest this weekend: "I just want to share with you, that I hadnt imagined that a driver can be so friendly as Hamilton and Hülkenberg. I waited for many drivers in front of their hotels, and they were the only who stop for a picture or signiture. Button's guards pushed me back, so i didnt really have any chance. and i would rahter not say anything about Webber. So I have now my new favorites"

Webber is now fastest with a 1:19.940.

Most the cars have now returned to the pits for some last minute set up adjustments before they head out on soft tyres in the last ten minutes.

Sauber are strugging to get Kobayashi's car back in the garage. The doors down there are pretty narrow and they are having to do a seven-point turn to find the right angle to get it in there.

Button has hit the track on soft tyres, let's see what he can do.

Stephen asks: "Have Mclaren install Flexible Front Wing into their cars same as Red Bulls and Ferraris?"

Nope, but I was talking to engineering director Paddy Lowe earlier this week and he said it was something they would have to look in to. However, he said it would not be a simple thing to design and just bolt on.

Webber leaves the pits in the Red Bull.

Button has set the fastest first sector yet ... but loses a second in the middle sector to the Red Bulls ... and sets the fourth fastest time, 1.5 seconds off Webber's time on hard tyres.

Hamilton is also out on softs but is just cruising round on his first lap.

Alonso is a second off Webber's time.

Webber sets a 1:19.574 on the softs, the Red Bulls look so dominant. Hamilton is 1.8 seconds off Webber on his last lap.

Vettel was on a fast lap but got held up by both Saubers in the final sector and then drops the revs and backs off on his next attempt.

Alonso set the fastest first sector so far but lost 0.5 seconds in sector two. He ends up 1.1 seconds off the pace.

Webber is back in the pits, he'll be happy with his time, which is 0.6 faster than anyone else including Vettel.

Chequered flag is out and Vettel can only improve by a couple of tenths. But it's worth saying that his best lap was ruined by traffic.

So we can safely say either Webber or Vettel will be on pole, bar any mistakes by Red Bull. Alonso is over a second off the pace and everybody else is around 1.5 seconds off or more.

Renault looks competitive with both drivers in the top seven.

Renault looks competitive with both drivers in the top seven. McLaren less so as Hamilton was sixth and Button ninth.

Thank you for joining us during this session. We will be back for qualifying, make sure you don't miss it.
