Felipe Massa believes Romain Grosjean's should not have been penalised for passing him with four wheels off the track at the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Grosjean attempted an audacious move on Massa at Turn 4 as he came up behind the Ferrari on a different strategy, hanging his Lotus around the outside of the high-speed left hander to take the position. As he exited the corner he had all four wheels off the track in order to avoid the Ferrari and the stewards deemed that he gained an advantage as a result and slapped him with a drive-through penalty.

"I think it's wrong if he took the penalty for what he did with me," Massa said. "It was not really wrong. I don't think he went four wheels outside, I thought it was only two. No complaints from me."

Massa struggled to eighth place at the end of the race but refused to blame Pirelli's new tyre constructions for his lack of form.

"I think, first of all, the car was not competitive at this track, that was the most important thing," he said. "We saw teams like Mercedes doing a good job on these tyres despite the temperature being high and they won the race. I don't know, maybe these tyres are going to be better for other teams but I think we need to wait a couple of races to be sure on different types of track."
